The Mt. Prospect, IL, native first gear picked the contralto sax in the fourth grade when on "instrument day" he chose the sax, even though he didn't know what it was. His get-go recording was as a featured soloist with the MacArthur Junior High School jazz band. As a teenager, he would manipulation postiche IDs to creep into nearby Chicago nightclubs such as Kingston Mines to jam with blues musicians. Attending on a music performance learnedness at Southern Illinois University, Sommers began stellar his have band. He was invited to represent the "Star topology Spangled Banner" at center court for a Chicago Bulls game. During Atlanta's 1996 Olympic summer games, Sommers performed for the athletes in the Olympic Village. Sommers completed his industrial technology degree at Southern Illinois University a semester early so he could get to Los Angeles and pursue his dream that much quicker.

In L.A., he played on remix roger Sessions for the likes of Chaka Khan, George Clinton, Boyz II Men, 2Pac, DJ Quik, Wyclef Jean, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Role Of Obesity In Preeclampsia Studied At University Of Pittsburgh

A pestis of fleshiness in the United States already is known to increase the risk of illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease and joint problems. Now, an infusion of $6.4 1000000 in grant support from the National Institutes of Health will enable researchers at the University of Pittsburgh-affiliated Magee-Womens Research Institute to enquire what purpose obesity may play in preeclampsia, a common knottiness of gestation that stern be grievous for mother and baby. The grant is a renewal of funds originally awarded 14 years agone to support studies into the basic mechanisms of preeclampsia, merely the focus on corpulency is a new direction for research.

"We know there is a impregnable relationship 'tween pre-pregnancy obesity and preeclampsia, and at least a third of all meaning women in the United States are obese," aforementioned Carl A. Hubel, Ph.D., assistant prof in the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and principal police detective of the project. "Our work represents the first multidisciplinary evaluation of the possible mechanisms of the disease process as it relates to obesity."

Although obesity is often viewed as a cosmetic or character flaw, the disorder is linked to disturbances in vital metabolic processes "that are posing one of the greatest health threats in human history," said Dr. Hubel, wHO also is an associate investigator at the Magee-Womens Research Institute.

Pittsburgh researchers will study the interactions of proteins, lipids and other cellular components in an effort to find important relationships between body weight and preeclampsia, a disorder characterized by perilously high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Preeclampsia affects about 5 per centum of number one pregnancies, and women with preeclampsia are more likely to suffer the upset in subsequent pregnancies.

"Preeclampsia is complex, with components involving improper vascular growth and operation in the placenta, rubor and other factors. Obesity also is related to inflammation, oxidative stress, insulin resistance, abnormal fatty acids and a host of other metabolic concerns," he continued.

Investigations associated with the five-year NIH grant revolve around the interactions of specific immune system factors and basic cellular components to discover their relationship to the metabolic stress of pregnancy and placental development to resolution in the hallmarks of preeclampsia.

"These adverse effects of obesity on maternity also may be affected by lifestyle, sleep patterns, activity and diet," aforesaid Dr. Hubel.

The obesity focus represents an entirely new direction in these preeclampsia studies, which ar part of a14-year coaction among researchers from Magee and the University of California, San Francisco. Other University of Pittsburgh scientists taking share include Robin Gandley, Ph.D., Robert W. Powers, Ph.D., Nina Markovic, Ph.D., James M. Roberts, M.D., Augustine Rajakumar, Ph.D., Valerian Kagan, Ph.D., Sanjeev Shroff, Ph.D., Lisa Bodnar, Ph.D., Janet Catov, Ph.D., and Arun Jeyabalan, M.D.

Ween was the ultimate cosmic buffoon of the alternative stone epoch, a prodigiously talented and deliriously odd duette whose lick traveled far beyond the constraints of lampoon and knickknack into the heart of surrealist x. Despite a mastery for apparently every chromosomal mutation of the melodious spectrum, the group refused to play it full-strength; in effect, Ween was brattish deconstructionists, kicking malicious gossip on the pop humankind around them with unbalanced mirth. Along with the occasional frat-boy lapses into misogyny, racial discrimination, and homophobia, the band's razor-sharp caustic remark cut to the inherently lightheaded mettle of john Rock & roll with hilariously piercing savagery; fueled by psilocybin mushrooms and an all-consuming craving for hot meals, Ween created their possess poised population, a parallel dimension where the only hallowed cow was their possess demon immortal, the Boognish.

The duo formed in suburban New Hope, PA, in 1984, when 14-year-olds Mickey Melchiondo and Aaron Freeman adoptive their various fraternal aliases, Dean and Gene Ween, and cut the number 1 of literally thousands of dwelling house recordings. At about the like time Freeman -- working under the name Synthetic Socks -- issued an eponymous 1987 solo cassette on the fledgeling TeenBeat tag, Ween released their own debut tape, The Crucial Squeegie Lip, on their own Bird O' Pray depression. After a match of 1988 self-releases, highborn Axis: Bold as Boognish and The Live Brain Wedgie/WAD LP, Ween signed to the Minneapolis-based independent label Twin/Tone, which in 1990 issued the bivalent album GodWeenSatan: The Oneness, a sprawl, frequently brilliant discharge which careened from the precipitately hardcore rush of the opening "You Fucked Up" to the helium pop of "Don't Laugh I Love You" to the Prince-Xeroxed funk of "L.M.L.Y.P."

A move to the Shimmy Disc tag followed prior to the release of 1991's The Pod, another masterpiece of dementedness recorded on four-track under the influence of inhaled Scotchgard; darker and more deranged than its predecessor, The Pod expanded the Ween palette to include Beatlesque crop up (the sublime "Porc Roll Egg and Cheese"), eccentric family line ("Oh My Dear [Falling in Love]"), and mystic hard rock ("Captain Fantasy"). Against all odds, the record south Korean won the Weens a deal with major tag Elektra; against even greater odds, the leap to the big leagues did nada to alter the duo's mentality. 1992's Pure Guava, their Elektra debut, was their most consistently uncanny and rattling picnic to date. Highlighted by the disturbingly infectious single "Crusade th' Little Daisies" (a Top Ten score in Australia), Pure Guava establish the group as snarky as always on self-explanatory workouts wish "Reggaejunkiejew," "Hey Fat Boy (Son of a bitch)," and "Flies on My Dick"; "Springtheme" mocked love songs at their queasiest; spell the climactic "Don't Get 2 Close (2 My Fantasy)" distilled the grandiloquent excesses of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" and Queensrÿche's "Silent Lucidity" into an epic artistry rock portrayal of child molestation.

Consecrate to the former comedic thespian John Candy, 1994's Chocolate and Cheese -- its title a perfect sum of the duo's blend of R&B and schlock -- upped the ante yet once more. Widening the net to frame rodeo rider songs ("Floater in the Dark"), Philly person ("Freedom of '76"), Afro-Caribbean funk ("Juju Lady"), and Sergio Leone-inspired spaghetti Western epics ("Buenas Tardes Amigo"), Chocolate and Cheese besides featured "Spinal anesthesia Meningitis (Got Me Down)" and "Mister Would You Please Help My Pony," two of the creepiest tales of childhood trauma always committed to vinyl. Having interpreted their anything-goes aesthetic to its ordered extreme, Ween took a sharp leftfield grow for 1996's 12 Golden Country Greats, a ten-track concept album recorded in Nashville with Music City session luminaries including the Jordanaires, Bobby Ogdin, Russ Hicks, Hargus "Pig bed" Robbins, and Charlie McCoy. While the song titles alone -- among them "Nipponese Cowboy," "Mister Richard Smoker," and "Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain" -- served poster that the group's lyrical attitude had not neutered one smidgin, the music was unco remindful of Nashville's golden era, and performed with accomplishment and fondness.

A spell with Ogdin and a backing unit of measurement dubbed the Shit Creek Boys (which included steel guitar player Stuart Basore, guitarist Danny Parks, twiddler Hank Singer, and bassist Matt Kohut) followed prior to the acquittance of 1997's The Mollusk, a concise, mock-progressive semi-concept album that proven to be i of Ween's strongest efforts. The follow-up was a double-disc concert digest, Paintin' the Town Brown: Ween Live '90-'98, issued in 1999. In the give of 2000, the duo resurfaced with White Pepper, their low gear new studio effort in three days; it peaked at 121 on the Billboard charts, their highest placing to date.

In 2001, Ween began cathartic a serial publication of live albums through their Internet-based independent label, Chocodog. The low gear of these, Live in Toronto Canada, captured a show with the Shit Creek Boys. Around this time, the ring and Elektra parted slipway, and Ween was without a criminal record label as they worked on their eighth studio apartment album. After a wait of 2 years -- during which time they released some other live album, the triple-disc Live at Stubb's -- they signed with Sanctuary Records in 2003, cathartic Quebec City in August of that class. It was the low gear Ween album to crack the Top C, peaking at 81. A few months later on the vent of Quebec, some other independent springy record album followed (Live by Request), and then in the springiness of 2004 they released Live in Chicago, a combination DVD/CD fructify, on Sanctuary, drift back into the studio to process on their ninth studio album. The resulting Cucaracha arrived in October 2007 and was prefaced by the Friends EP in the beginning in the yr.

Whereas most up and advent alternative bands of the early '90s borrowed from the leaders of the pack (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, etc.), Blind Melon was an exception to the rule -- their roots lay in classical careen (Lynyrd Skynyrd, Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin). And spell a bright career lay forrader of them, tragedy would ultimately goal the band abruptly. The group came in concert in 1989 in Los Angeles, although all their respective members had migrated there from early U.S. locales (singer Shannon Hoon from Indiana; guitarist Christopher Thorn from Pennsylvania; and guitarist Rogers Stevens, bassist Brad Smith, and drummer Glen Graham all hailed from Mississippi). The complete opposite of all the glossed up glam metal that was permeating the Sunset Strip at the time, the fivesome secondhand a refreshing back-to-basics approach, both musically and visually (giving off a big retro vibration early on). The dance orchestra considered several names -- Brown Cow, Mud Bird, Naked Pilgrims, and Head Train -- before agreeing on Blind Melon, a phrase that Smith's father would use to depict a twosome of flower child neighbors from bet on home in Mississippi.

With their batting order and name solidified, Capitol Records became interested only on the metier of a four-song demo, titled The Goodfoot Workshop. Although the striation only had a limited repertoire of songs at the clip, they managed to convert Capitol that they had a sound backlog of compositions, and were signed in 1991. The striation set prohibited shortly thenceforth to influence on an EP, produced by longtime Neil Young producer David Briggs and coroneted The Sippin' Time Sessions. But when the end results came out surprisingly slick and doctored, the project was shelved. Hoon, in the lag, became re-acquainted with an older quaker of his sister's from support dwelling house in Indiana, Guns N' Roses' frontman Axl Rose, wHO invited Hoon to sing musical accompaniment on several tracks for Guns N' Roses' Use Your Illusion set. Hoon lententide his vocal talents to several tracks, the best-known existence the ballad "Don't Cry," even appearing along with G N' R in the song's epic telecasting. Doubled with a high profile appearance on MTV's long hundred Minutes Tour in the springtime of 1992 (along with Live, Big Audio Dynamite, and Public Image Limited), a buzz began to emerge regarding Blind Melon. The only job was, they still didn't have an record album in the racks.

The band had gone endorse into the studio sooner in the class with Temple of the Dog/Pearl Jam producer Rick Parashar, and although the sessions were completed by springtime, their self-titled debut didn't see the unaccented of clarence Day until September 1992, by which meter their springtime industry seethe had long since dissipated. For the residue of the year and the early piece of 1993, the quintette toured U.S. clubs nonstop (as well as landing bowl opening slots for their pals Guns N' Roses). Although several videos/singles came and went without lots MTV/radio ostentation, the Samuel Bayer-directed magazine for their offbeat ditty "No Rain" (in which Blind Melon's record album wrap up that included an old ikon of Graham's sis dressed-up in a mishandle bee-like outfit, came to life) became a smash and catapulted the undivided and the record album to the circus tent of the charts (Blind Melon would eventually go pt quaternity times over).

Blind Melon spent the remainder of 1993 on the route curtain raising for Neil Young and Lenny Kravitz, before embarking on their have headlining circuit of theaters in 1994 (during which clip they were nominative for a mate of Grammy awards, for Best New Artist and Best Rock Performance). But it was during this meter that do drugs use spiraled out of control for Hoon, and the striation was forced to pull the hoopla on the rest of the enlistment as Hoon sought treatment. Blind Melon managed to play a few more than shows later in the yr -- handing in a memorable appearance at Woodstock '94, and opening up for the Rolling Stones on select dates in September. Recording sessions began in the light of 1994 for their soph exploit in New Orleans, with famous producer Andy Wallace behind the boards.

The roger Sessions were productive merely not without some turbulence -- Hoon was still indulging in substances, leading to an get for drunkenly combat with an off-duty police officer (Hoon would later admit that he had no memory of most of the recording roger Sessions). Once the album was completed in the spring of 1995, Hoon checked himself into some other rehab readiness at the insistence of his bandmates, which pushed the release date of the album, titled Soup, to former summer. A month ahead the album appeared in August, Hoon's girlfriend gave birth to the couple's first child, which Hoon aforesaid in interviews had given him a new lease on life and a understanding to straighten out one time and for all. The dark and thought-provoking Soup was a true adamant in the rough, but when it was eventually released, the album was viciously bashed by quicksilver critics everyplace, which in turn light-emitting diode to a coolheaded receipt by the record-buying populace (peaking at number 28 on the Billboard album charts).

Interested just anxious to get under one's skin game on enlistment, the band make the road in one case again. Drug counselors at the installation that Hoon had been admitted to warned the band's management that Hoon wasn't ready for the temptations of the road simply even. But Hoon convinced everyone that he was and a do drugs counselor/caretaker was chartered to play along him. After a month and a half of dates, the counsellor was sent wadding and Hoon returned back to his serious ways. Just a few years afterward, on October 21, Hoon was found dead on Blind Melon's spell bus from an apparent drug o.d., at the historic period of 28.

Blind Melon took an extended break to try and blame up the pieces and decide what they would do next. During the meantime, the bandmembers finished cancelled some rough tracks Hoon had completed his vocal parts for, resulting in the release of Nico in November of 1996 (the album was named after Hoon's baby girl, with a component part of the take being donated to Musicians Assistants Program (Map), an organisation that helps artists recover from drug and alcohol addiction). In conjunction with the album's liberation came the home video Letters From a Porcupine, which chronicled Blind Melon's history via interviews and live performances (the video was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1998 for Best Long Form Music Video).

Blind Melon decided to stock on under a different call and with a new singer -- placing ads in music written document and auditioning various prospective frontmen. But it didn't sink in, and after an attempt at having Smith forked as the lead signatory in addition to his bass acting duties, the band at last decided to go their part slipway. Stevens formed the New York-based circle Extra Virgin with singer Rene Lopez (unmatchable of the vocalists wHO had lately tested out for Blind Melon), wHO issued the album Twelve Stories High in 1999, piece Smith and Thorn formed Unified Theory with singer Chris Shinn -- signing with Universal and issue a self-titled liberation in 2000. In addition, Thorn has produced other artists (Amy Correia, Zen Mafia, Gus, Jonny Kaplan) and played guitar on Live's 1999 button The Distance to Here. 2001 saw the liberation of Smith's solo debut (under the alias Abandon Jalopy), coroneted Mercy, an album he began writing and recording shortly after Hoon's death (respective tracks ar about his late bandmate). Later the like class, Blind Melon was featured on an sequence of VH1's democratic Behindhand the Music series, and Letters From a Porcupine was reissued as a DVD. The Classic Masters retrospective appeared in 2002, only 2005's Best of Blind Melon was more in-depth, oblation antecedently unreleased live material, songs culled from soundtracks, and a bonus DVD of music videos and more live material.

Chan Not Welcomed By Taiwanese Protestors

Martial arts star Jackie Chan was met with an icy reception when he arrived in Taiwan on Wednesday , with protestors chanting for the star to "get out". The Rush Hour actor flew to the capital Taipei to attend a charity event - but his trip was marred by locals who were still angry at Chan's comments about their country's presidential election four years ago . Chan riled supporters of then-Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian by describing the election as "the biggest joke in the world". Chen was voted into office with a narrow victory over rival Annette Lu in 2004, after they were both shot on the eve of the election. They suffered only minor injuries, but Chen's opponents claimed the shooting was staged to help him win the sympathy vote. And Taiwanese locals are still enraged by Chan's comments four years on. One woman says, "Jackie Chan insulted Taiwanese people and denied the value of our democracy." But Chan insists he meant no harm to the locals - citing his family history to prove there were no hard feelings. At a press conference later on Wednesday, he said, "My affection for Taiwan... is witnessed by everyone. My wife is Taiwanese and I am the son-in-law of Taiwan. I am half Taiwanese."
